Laws for hunting with a crossbow

Laws for hunting with a crossbow vary by state. If you want to hunt with a crossbow, check with your state to see if you need to have a special license.

The Answer: Almost certainly not. Hunting with a crossbow is forbidden in all 50 states. Unless you live in Washington State, where it is legal to hunt bears with a crossbow. Luckily for us, during the summer months, you can get wild game in even the wildest of places with a crossbow. The following is from the Washington State Hunting Web site:

bear hunting season extends from June 30th through August 15th in the state of Alaska; however, after that time, all bear hunters must secure a bear license through the Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Regulations for hunting with a crossbow

There are some regulations when you hunt with a crossbow:

1. You must have a valid hunting license and a crossbow license.

2. The crossbow you are using must be registered to you with the DNR.

3. You must be at least 14 years of age and be accompanied by a licensed adult.

4. You must wear hunter orange clothing.

5.The crossbow must be a non-sporting version of the traditional crossbow.

Although crossbows can be an interesting hunting tool, because of legal regulations it is best to hunt with a bow and arrow. Hunting with crossbows sometimes causes accidents and can even result in injury.

Below are some helpful tips to help use a crossbow safely:

Opt for a tripod.

Unless you are using a hunting crossbow specifically designed for crossbows, eye protection and a tripod are a must. Taking risks with a dangerous tool can lead to injury or worse.

Keep the crossbow pointed downrange and shoulder-width apart the entire time.

Crossbows are powerful but can be dangerous when fired backwards. Always use the crossbow at an angle to the belly button or below.

Aim for the square behind the target when firing. This helps reduce recoil.

Avoid putting too much force on the trigger or pulling the trigger quickly. Identify the point of highest tension and keep the trigger clear, slowing the shot.

Always use a stand.

Hang the crossbow on a tree limb a few feet from a sturdy tree with good limb support.

Aim for animals up close, moving slowly, such as deer or mountain lions.

White-tail deer may be a challenge to hunt with a crossbow, as you may need to use binoculars.

Try to use the crossbow in forests or open areas where the animals cannot blend in with the foliage.

Tips on using a crossbow while hunting bear

While hunting bear, it is important to be able to deliver a killing shot without disturbing the surrounding forest and making the bear aware of your presence. Here are a few tips to help you hit your mark when hunting bear: 1) Be aware of the location of the wind. It can change direction rapidly and you need to be prepared to change your position and angle to ensure you have the shot. 2) When hunting bear be sure to be aware of potentially dangerous areas. It is beneficial to have the proper attire and gear if you are going to hunt bear. If you are just using a crossbow, you need to be very aware of the targets beyond the scope of your crossbow.

Resist the urge to shoot straight away if possible. There are many bows available and you can often find cheaper alternatives. Just remember that if you are not 100% sure of your shot, take some time to be safe.
